  • A. Ellis is known for his simplistic renderings of portraits in a two-dimensional composition.  Figures and their clothing become flat and textured in their presentation.  Ellis' work is so scarce, there is little known about the painter.  It is presumed that his work evolved from the Readfield-Waterville area of central Maine.  Two of his portraits are at the Fenimore Art Museum and illustrate what his considered his characteristic compositional style.  Most of his work that has been attributed to him was on oil on panel. The painting displayed in this biography was taken from the collection of Historic New England. He seemed to be active between 1820-35.  The known paintings that are dated 1832.
